Biira Juliet – Powering Change in Kasese

Biira Juliet, a 22-year-old mother of two from Kyamizi village in Kasese District, is a graduate of the Green Colleges programme who has transformed her life and community through solar energy entrepreneurship. Once struggling to survive on low-paying jobs after dropping out of school due to financial hardship, Juliet now runs a thriving solar business serving over 50 households.

Growing up in a community without reliable electricity, Juliet witnessed firsthand how darkness limited opportunities—children studied by dim kerosene lamps and businesses closed early. Determined to change this reality, she enrolled in a solar training programme by MNIK Community Foundation, where she gained practical skills in solar installation, maintenance, and energy planning.

After completing the training, Juliet received a starter toolkit and a small grant, enabling her to establish “Bright Future Solar Solutions.” She began providing solar lighting systems, charging services, and maintenance to households and small businesses in her community.

Despite initial skepticism due to gender norms, Juliet’s professionalism and quality service quickly built trust. Her business expanded beyond her village, and she now installs solar systems in neighboring communities while also mentoring youth in basic solar maintenance skills.

Today, Juliet earns a stable income, supports her family, and contributes to local development by improving access to clean energy. Her work has extended productive hours for businesses and improved learning conditions for children.

“I used to depend on others for help,” Juliet says. “Now, I bring light not just to my home but to many others. I feel proud every day.”
