Uganda is one of the countries in Africa struggling with high malaria burdens. Kyenjojo is one of the districts in Uganda with high malaria cases. The district registered between 1500-2000 malaria cases per day. This translates to 2 cases per day at Kyenjojo Secondary School.
This led to the foundation of Tembo Organic, a company producing mosquito repellent Vaseline and spray. In 2023 when Joint Effort to Save the Environment, through their funding partner, Forest of the World, organized a competition, with the theme “Green Enterprises,” Kyenjojo Secondary School- Tembo Organic joined the competition and has never looked back.
“We won the competition and received seed capital worth 500,000 UGX.” Mr. Kyalingoza Paul shared.
Housed at Kyenjojo Secondary School, Tembo has a production department where all the magic happens. The venture has enabled them to connect to the outside world. Business is progressing well. They opened up a bank account at Stanbic Bank and procured a stamp for tracking dates on the products.
We have added a new product, an Organic mosquito repellent spray that has been on the market for a year now. This has expanded our customer base with customers across the districts of Kyenjojo, Hoima, Kampala, Fort Portal, and Kabarole.
Tembo Organic employs 12 agents and 4 other staff in production and administration. They continue to empower communities to access organic products and protect the environment, adding to our revenue.
Our plans include: purchasing land to expand our business further, provide all round solution for the client base, expanding our production units, and empowering students even after they leave the school. This will ensure they carry on with the innovation. Mr. Kyalingoza shared.
We truly appreciate JESE and the Forest of World team for believing in us. We would not be where we are without their support.
